To keep a cow healthy and able to make about 8 gallons of milk each day, her meals need to be nutritious and full of fiber and protein. Milking cows eat about 100 pounds of feed each day, in a mix of forage, grain, minerals, and vitamins. Their meals are similar to trail mix! Kerfelds grow and harvest corn into silage, which is the entire corn plant chopped into pieces and stored for feeding year round. They can do the same with alfalfa haylage. Cover crops like oats, barley, and rye are also grown and harvested to feed the cows healthy meals!
